About
The Grey Room is a music production facility in Oakland, California. The studio is malleable; transforming from a tuned mix room, a composing suite, a beat-smiths workstation to tracking full bands. Think of the studio as an instrument itself. The live room, control room and isolation booth are acoustically treated allowing for faithful recreation of all sonic character. The echo chamber is unique to its dimensions and materials. Curated selection of house instruments available during sessions.
We would love to show you around and talk about your music, more importantly we want to help you manifest your vision. Reach out, lets make some music.
Tracking, Mixing and Producing are mainstays at The Grey Room; however we really don't like to limit things. Check out all that we do...
Old vs New, Analog vs Digital, Clean vs Dirty. We love tone and we don't discriminate. We tinker and upgrade gear and sometimes build our own. See what's available...

Tape Op Gear REviews
STEINBERG BACKBONE
Steinberg revealed what they label as a drum re-synthesizer in Backbone. In a market saturated with sample packs, this plug-in can help tailor samples into unique drum sounds, create risers, impacts, and other sound design effects. It is essentially a sampler, but more than a traditional sampler, it's focused on the layering and manipulation of one-shot drum samples.
BITWIG 3: BITWIG STUDIO
Is it a modular sound design tool masquerading as a DAW, or is it a DAW acting as a modular instrument? Bitwig Studio blurs these boundaries, creating an environment where traditional linear time and clip-based arrangements coexist. Modularity weaves through all facets of this application, and full modular systems cannot only be constructed but also interact inside of the DAW.
DRAWMER 1970
A new addition to the venerable Drawmer line, the 1970, is a dual FET compressor, dual mic pre, and mono DI. It's versatile and easy to use with a vast feature set. While the 1970 borrows its layout inspiration from the Drawmer 1960, features have been updated and it's not a tube-based unit.
Plasma Rack
Gamechanger Audio is a Latvian-based company founded in 2015. Since then, they've released the Plus Pedal, the Motor Synth, and this new line of Plasma distortions. With their namesake as a constant reminder of what they are striving for, each of the former devices has been designed from a completely unique philosophy. So, what does the Plasma Rack do?
Opto Compressor
AudioScape is run by Chris Yetter in Daytona, Florida, and currently produces six different compressors and an EQ, all based off of classic, well-known designs – including an SSL style bus compressor and British Zener-style diode compressor! Focusing on no compromise remakes while hitting affordable price points, these boxes are all hand built in the USA. This review will home in on the AudioScape Opto Compressor, akin to the '60s era Teletronix LA-2A [Tape Op #26].
WT-Compressor
Variable-mu compressors are renowned for their soft, gooey compression. A few of the heavyweights that come to mind are the Fairchild 660, RCA BA6A, and Gates Sta-Level. All of these come with a hefty price tag to go along with that sound, but what about a sub $1000 variable-mu? There used to be the Dizengoff D864, but that only exists on the used market. Enter Locomotive Audio's Weight Tank, a variable-mu compressor that lives up to its name.
